Chicken clever

Beans leftover from last night found on the stove this morning?
No problem, throw them off the back deck to the chickens.

Cobs of sweet corn after being eaten for dinner?
Toss them to the chickens who will love you forever
until they forget.

Overripe fruit forgotten on the counter?
Cut them into pieces and listen to that happy chicken croon.

One spoonful of rice left in the pan?
Flick it to the chickens.

Kefir culture forgotten a day or two or three too long in the heat?
Chickens love kefir.
Loooooove kefir.
And they get this adorable little milk smustache.

Got chicken?

They will run, flapping and clucking, from anywhere on the property as soon as they hear the back door open.

In my mind's eye, it's the beach running scene from Chariot's of Fire complete with soundtrack but instead of arms pumping,
it's wings flapping.

I appreciate their enthusiasm and especially that happy little, "I found a yummie and you can't have it" call.  They grab a piece and run off to savor it away from prying beaks all the while crooning about their good fortune in getting the best bits.

I feel like such an exciting, appreciated, popular person who makes chickens happy on a budget and "wastes not, wants not" instead of simply the mom who forgot to put the beans away or use the fresh fruit in time.

Aaah, chicken clever.
